Individual contractor (laboratory technician) (local)

The individual contractor will assist the UNODC laboratory activities focusing on training and capacity-building, preparation and distribution of drug and precursor field identification kits, provision of reference materials, and general laboratory functions. The role supports the organization and delivery of training activities and contributes to laboratory operations including inventory and procurement support.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation and delivery of UNODC Laboratory and Scientific Service training activities, including preparing training samples and materials, supporting the logistical organization of trainings, and assisting in the delivery of training sessions in both laboratory and classroom settings.
• Assist in the preparation of training and capacity-building materials, including technical documentation and supporting tools used during training activities.
• Assist in the analysis of samples/materials, involving the use and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation such as GC-MS, HPLC, GC-FID, LC-MS/MS, FTIR, portable Raman, as well as the use of TLC and colour tests.
• Assist in the preparation of UNODC drug and precursor test kits, including preparing, bottling and labelling solutions and test reagents, and assembling and preparing kits for distribution.
• Assist in the preparation of UNODC International Collaborative Exercises (ICE) test samples and reference materials, including preparing, labelling, weighing, assembling, packing, and preparing shipments.
• Assist in the general daily housekeeping activities of the laboratory, including procurement of laboratory items, and inventory management of laboratory equipment and materials.
• Use and update relevant databases to support laboratory, training, and programme activities.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Post-high school qualification in physical or natural sciences (preferably chemistry or a related discipline) is desirable.
• Candidates who have not completed a full post-high school qualification may be considered if they demonstrate sufficient relevant laboratory experience.
• Experience in analytical chemistry and hands-on use of laboratory instrumentation (such as GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR or similar techniques) is desirable.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team, and to collaborate with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds, are desirable.
• A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience working in a laboratory environment in the field of natural or life sciences is required.
• Experience in analytical chemistry and hands-on use of laboratory instrumentation (such as GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR or similar techniques) is desirable.
