See your match score & applyThe National Gender Expert acts as the main focal point for all gender-related activities of the project aimed at accelerating and improving gender equality and women's empowerment results in selected UNIDO programmes and projects. The expert conducts gender assessments, training, monitoring, and supports gender mainstreaming in project implementation within the African region.
Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth reviews and assessments of project design and implementation with a gender lens, taking into account the local context.
- Collect sex-disaggregated baseline data that will be used to monitor gender impacts if not already established.
- Assess the gender awareness and sensitivity of project beneficiaries and stakeholders.
- Conduct gender sensitization training for project staff at all levels and maintain the desired level of gender awareness.
- Develop or update a Gender Action Plan for the project containing concrete activities leading to gender-related results.
- Assist in the recruitment of project staff to ensure gender equality in recruitment and a gender focus in staff competencies to support implementation of gender activities.
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor implementation of gender activities, collect sex-disaggregate data on gender responsive targets and indicators, and prepare corresponding progress reports.
- Identify any unanticipated risks and/or negative gender impacts and adjust or develop project activities to mitigate these issues as needed.
- Engage and provide necessary support to relevant government agencies, NGOs, community-based organizations, and women’s associations or groups to facilitate collaboration and enhance gender results of project implementation.
Requirements
- Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in social or natural sciences, or other relevant discipline with specialization in human development, gender mainstreaming or sustainable development is required.
- Alternatively, a first level university degree or an advanced technical college diploma may be acceptable provided it is combined with additional 5 years of professional hand-on experience that is directly relevant to the expertise required by the specific assignment.
- At least five (5) years of professional experience in gender equality and gender mainstreaming is required.
- Experience in gender analysis tools and methodologies in the specific area of intervention and gender planning and demonstrated expertise in mainstreaming gender in projects/programmes is required.
- Thorough understanding of the gender context in country or region, and experience working with government institutions and international or non-governmental organizations supporting gender and development work in the specific area of intervention is required.
- Formal training in gender analysis and gender planning and demonstrated expertise in mainstreaming gender in projects and programmes, especially in the specific area of intervention is desirable.
- Experience with gender analysis tools and methodologies is desirable.
- Experience in evaluating the needs, conditions and problems in the country or similar country in the region is desirable.
- Strong communication skills, and ability to liaise with various stakeholders, including government officials is desirable.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
- Fluency and/or working knowledge of other UN language and in particular working languages of the local context is desirable.
- This position is open to nationals and legally resident individuals of China, Thailand, India, Nepal, Iran, and Cambodia. The selected National Gender Expert must be a national of, or hold legal residency in, the country of assignment.
