The consultant will support the UNEP Ecosystem Division's Director's Office to increase the visibility of the Division's impact and outputs related to the Nature sub-programme of UNEP’s medium term strategy. The role involves developing communication materials, coordinating strategic engagement, and enhancing visibility of the Nature sub-programme.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise in developing clear, concise, and descriptive communication materials that convey the impact of the Division's work and raise the organization's profile on the Nature subprogramme.
  • Prepare and review communication materials such as briefing notes, speaking points, publication forewords, media articles, and preparation for media interviews at short notice.
  • Analytical review, development and compiling of substantive messages, working with the technical and policy experts across the division to ensure that the messaging is clear and in line with the Division and UNEP's overall priorities.
  • Coordinate the planning and delivery for strategic engagement in key events and anticipate opportunities to prepare in advance for communication outcomes.
  • Provide recommendations to enhance the visibility of the Nature sub-programme including monitoring news and events for strategic engagement.
  • Keep abreast of the news and policy agenda, and recommend how UNEP's perspectives could be timely to contribute to key global debates.
  • Provide alerts as needed to respond to major trends and opportunities.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, International Relations, Political Science or Development Studies; or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Minimum ten years of work experience in communication or related fields is required.
  • Experience in preparing communication and advocacy related materials in an international organizational setting in an environmental context is required.
  • Knowledge and expertise in diverse environment and sustainable development issues is desirable.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
