Public Information Intern

The internship is in the Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section of the Department of Global Communications. The intern will contribute to projects focused on enhancing educational, communications and digital outreach resources related to human rights and United Nations outreach initiatives, including research, content development, and support for audiovisual and outreach activities.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on thematic issues related to human rights, equality, anti-discrimination and United Nations outreach initiatives.
• Contribute to the development of educational, communications and digital outreach products by drafting and editing website content, news stories, social media content and multimedia materials.
• Research lectures, exhibitions, speakers, educational initiatives and outreach activities relevant to the project and synthesize findings for inclusion in project materials and resources.
• Support the creation of audiovisual project deliverables through research, transcribing, and preparation of content for digital and social media platforms.
• Contribute to the development of decks and other presentations, designed for internal information.
• Participate in project-related planning and coordination activities and contribute research, content and recommendations that support project events, lectures and outreach initiatives.

Requirements

• Applicants must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field.
• Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience but must have a field of study closely related to the internship.
• Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.
• Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
• Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
• Skills and experience in writing, social media and multimedia production are strongly desired.
• Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
• Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
• Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations; costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
• Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
• Applicants who have previously served six months, in total, as an intern in one or more UN Entities in the UN Secretariat cannot be engaged as an intern.
• Applicants who are children, siblings, and sons or daughters-in-law of an active staff member in a UN Secretariat cannot be engaged as an intern.
