The internship is located in the United Nations Information Center in Washington, D.C. The Center promotes public understanding and support for the United Nations by disseminating information materials, engaging partners, and bringing the UN closer to the people it serves. The internship is unpaid, full-time or part-time, and designed to be in person with some flexibility for remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with content and design of social media posts and conduct analysis of social media metrics.
  • Assist with the production of communication products, including conducting research, compiling information, coordinating logistics, and assisting with public inquiries.
  • Assist with preparations for events, high-level visitors from headquarters and field offices, and speaking engagements.
  • Assist in compiling, analyzing, and organizing data for office reports.
  • Attend meetings and draft summaries.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa.
  • If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
  • A completed online application (Cover Note and Personal History Profile) is required. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
  • Cover Note must include: Title of degree currently pursuing, Expected graduation date, List of computer skills and programs proficient in, List of top two areas of interest within the United Nations, Explanation why you are the best candidate, Explanation of interest in the United Nations Internship Program, Outline of availability to commence the internship.
  • Personal History Profile must include all past work experiences, ICT skills, a writing sample (2-3 pages maximum) and three references.
  • Candidates are not required to have professional experience, though beneficial if having interests, skills and knowledge in international affairs, international organizations, management and change.
  • Strong planning, writing and communication skills required.
  • Attention to detail and passion for researching big-picture issues.
  • Familiarity with the United Nations is desirable.
  • Experience with social media in a professional setting is desirable.
  • Washington, D.C.-specific experience is a plus.
  • Experience in consulting, policy work or executive management support is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications including Microsoft Office 365 and Google programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Fluency in English is required.
