Intern - Data Engineering

The internship supports the Operational Resilience Section (ORS) of the Department of Safety and Security by assisting in data-driven analyses and insights to support decision-making. The intern will help develop automated data pipelines, manage cloud services, and support web application projects focused on data and geospatial functionality.

Responsibilities

• Support the transition to more automated, sustainable and robust data pipelines in the Microsoft Azure cloud environment.
• Assist in the management, setup, and configuration of cloud services operated by UNDSS.
• Assist in automating survey to reporting workflow using cloud-based systems and serverless tools.
• Support the development and customization of web application projects with a focus on data-driven and geospatial functionality.
• Help monitor and troubleshoot unexpected issues in data harvesting systems and scripts (e.g., Azure Functions, MQuery, Python Scripts, Azure Data Factory).
• Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• Applicants must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) and graduated within one year, or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) or have graduated within one year.
• Official written proof from the university supporting the above must be attached to the application.
• Field of study must be closely related to Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Information Management, Geographic Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Analytics, Operations Research, Data Visualization or Information Design, Economics.
• Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
• Applicants must provide a completed online application including a cover note and candidate profile.
• Cover note must include title of degree currently pursuing, graduation date, IT skills and programmes proficient in, top three areas of interest, explanation of why the candidate is best for the internship, and interest in the UN Internship Programme.
• Applicants must include all past work experiences, IT skills, and three references in their Personal History Profile.
• Interns must adhere to UN rules and regulations including confidentiality, impartiality, and intellectual property rights.
• Applicants must not be a child or sibling of a staff member assigned to the same work unit or under direct/indirect supervision of that staff member.
• Applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English; knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
