The Intergovernmental Affairs Officer supports the organization and provision of secretariat services for sessions and meetings of the General Assembly, ECOSOC, and related intergovernmental bodies. The role involves preparing procedural notes, managing documentation, advising presiding officers, drafting reports and correspondence, and facilitating intergovernmental dialogue within the UN framework.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, coordinating and supervising the organization and provision of secretariat services for sessions and meetings of the General Assembly and its subsidiary organs as well as Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and its subsidiary bodies and United Nations conferences and their preparatory committees, and serve as Secretary/Deputy Secretary of intergovernmental bodies assigned.
  • Prepare procedural notes for the presiding officer for each meeting and on each agenda item and handle voting and election procedures.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate submission and issuance of all pre-session, in-session, and post-session documentation including draft resolutions, decisions and reports.
  • Provide continuous guidance and advice to presiding officers and other elected officers on organization of work, status of negotiations, conduct of business, rules of procedure, programme budget and conference servicing implications and administrative issues, leveraging ICT.
  • Prepare summaries and analytical reports on proceedings of meetings and follow up on implementation of decisions and recommendations.
  • Draft notes, background papers, talking points and other correspondence for senior UN officials and maintain contacts with delegates and staff in other UN offices and departments, and other international organizations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in international relations, law, diplomacy or related field.
  • A first-level university degree in any of these fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, law, diplomacy or related area is required.
  • Experience in the provision of substantive support to intergovernmental processes, and legislative machinery in an international organization such as the United Nations is required.
  • Experience in dealing with procedures, policies and practices of intergovernmental bodies of a major international organization is required.
  • Experience in the provision of advice to leaders of intergovernmental bodies is desirable.
  • Experience in data analytics is desirable.
  • English is required at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • French is desirable at UN Level II for reading, writing, listening and speaking.
