The Associate Public Information Officer supports the Public Information and Communications Section of UNSMIL by producing and disseminating information to local media and organizations, drafting communication products in English and Arabic, monitoring news and social media, and building communication capacity with national partners. The role involves supporting outreach activities, managing digital media platforms, and contributing to strategic communications campaigns in Libya.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and disseminate information to local media and organizations about the Mission, its aims and activities, supporting outreach activities and assisting in interactions in local language(s).
  • Draft daily news headlines and media reviews under supervision.
  • Lead the compilation, quality control and delivery of the morning news headlines across the organization each day as per SOP.
  • Monitor social media for developments and trends, draft social media analysis and highlight these with the team.
  • Monitor and analyze current events, public opinion and press; identify issues and trends and prepare notes to management on appropriate actions.
  • Draft a diverse range of communication products in English and Arabic, including social media posts, statements, media advisories, and support media and digital campaigns.
  • Cover Mission events and activities, producing photography and video content as needed.
  • Draft human interest stories for local and international audiences and produce digital content for social media platforms.
  • Provide communication support to managers and senior officers on public affairs issues and approaches.
  • Draft copy for internal communications such as reports, dashboards, newsletters, and handle website administration and social media updates.
  • Contribute to building communication capacity with national partners and strengthen local partnerships, media, and youth through ongoing programmes.
  • Contribute to developing strategic partnerships and outreach to maximize impact of public information objectives and raise visibility of the Mission.
  • Work on a rota basis for evenings and weekends to contribute to team workload management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience of two (2) more years in addition to the required years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.
  • Experience in events management and organization, including forums and themed conferences is desirable.
  • Relevant experience with United Nations Secretariat or UN Common System Organization (including Agencies, Funds and Programmes) and/or similar international organization is desirable.
  • English and Arabic language proficiency at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Candidates for the National Professional Officer category shall be of the nationality of the country where this position is located.
