IYCF Officer - Goljano & Harshin

The IYCF Officer supports Save the Children’s emergency nutrition programmes in Somali region, focusing on promoting accountability to beneficiaries and improving project quality and impact. The role involves close collaboration with MEAL Coordinator, project staff, and beneficiaries to establish accountability mechanisms and ensure nutrition program implementation according to national and SCI standards.

Responsibilities

• Manage the project unit's implementation of the nutrition program in agreement with the overall IYCF Program activities according to SCI and national standards.
• Ensure IYCF program implementation according to the National protocol including admission and discharge criteria and anthropometry measurement monitoring.
• Facilitate training under the project regarding IYCF.
• Support and liaise with health center staff providing on-the-job training and capacity building.
• Select and establish counselors from health facilities and the community.
• Establish and strengthen MTM support groups, train them, and follow up to support IYCF promotion activities.
• Strengthen BFC at targeted health facilities.
• Assess and diagnose feeding difficulties for all PLWs coming for other services, for screening, and at the community.
• Provide day-to-day one-to-one and group counseling for PLW regarding IYCF practices.
• Ensure health staff have adequate training on providing proper IYCF counseling.
• Conduct formative assessment for key behaviors and skills for IYCF and develop culturally appropriate IEC materials adapted to day-to-day counseling.
• Ensure availability of job aids, reporting formats, and all other supplies for IYCF.
• Create and maintain relationships with local health and other authorities and link IYCF program with existing health structure.
• Ensure health professionals participate in daily routine work for sustainability and smooth phase-out strategy.
• Provide technical support and training to all team members, outreach team including health extension workers and community volunteers.
• Work and liaise with local health workers to integrate IYCF program from the start.
• Organize monthly report of community mobilization, IYCF, and report on time to Sr. CMAM Officer, providing updates when needed.
• Report any problems timely to Woreda Health and Nutrition Lead.
• Uphold the image and values of Save the Children at all times.
• Perform other related tasks as required and assigned by the organization.

Requirements

• BSc/College Diploma in Nursing and/or other health related fields.
• At least Four years working experience in the field out of which two years NGO experience in related field.
• Experienced in nutrition and health program implementation – data collection and compilation, working with counterpart for lasting intervention, training of health workers, etc.
• Good written and spoken ability of the local language.
• Extremely flexible, able to work independently, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations.
• Interest in and ability to work in team.
• Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability and willingness to work in remote and potentially insecure environments.
• Awareness of international accountability standards including HAP (Humanitarian Accountability Partnership) and a demonstrated commitment to promoting these standards in ways of working and project implementation.
• Experience of working with an international NGO in Somali region.
• Experience of social work in local communities.
• Experience of effectively communicating findings to internal/external stakeholders.
• Experience in child friendly accountability systems.
• Previous experience of working in an emergency context.
