The Staff Officer (Linguist) provides linguistic services including translation, interpretation, editing, and terminology management to support the NATO - Ukraine interoperability mission at JATEC. The role involves translating official documents, coordinating interpretation support, revising translations, and maintaining NATO terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Translate official documents including budgets, financial statements, reports, correspondence, articles and other texts from English into Ukrainian and vice versa for JATEC as required.
  • Provide interpretation from English into Ukrainian and vice versa at JATEC events as required and coordinate interpretation support for the Command.
  • Revise translations executed by self and freelance translators contracted on an ad hoc basis.
  • Edit translated documents and provide editorial assistance to staff in both official languages on request.
  • Collect and coordinate material for the improvement and updating of glossaries, particularly of technical/military subjects.
  • Maintain liaison with other NATO bodies and international organizations to develop exchanges of mutually interesting material.
  • Responsible for NATO terminology matters and exercise related terminology.
  • Represent JATEC at conferences and working group meetings as directed.
  • Provide advice on all linguistic matters.

Requirements

  • University Degree and 4 years post related experience, or Higher Secondary education and completed advanced vocational training leading to a professional qualification or professional accreditation with 5 years post related and 2 years function related experience.
  • Four years’ experience as a professional translator in both languages with demonstrated ability to produce texts requiring minimum amendment for idiom, specialist terminology or debatable points before reproduction and issue.
  • Four years’ experience in revising, editing, formatting and proofreading of documents and publications in the English and Ukrainian language.
  • Two years’ experience in language-specific computer tools such as computer-assisted translation and terminology tools, voice recognition software and speaking dictionaries, interpretation equipment and dictation systems.
  • Must be a Ukrainian native speaker.
  • English - SLP 4343 - (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing).
  • The HQ's host nation language is required.
  • Knowledge of NATO organization and associated terminology (desirable).
  • Working knowledge in NATO IKM Tools (e.g. SharePoint, DHS, TT+) (desirable).
  • Prior experience working in a multinational environment (desirable).
