See your match score & applyThe Human Rights Officer / Economic Crimes Adviser will review and monitor implementation of international human rights instruments, conduct investigations of illicit financial flows related to human rights violations, liaise with financial institutions, prepare analytical briefs, and support human rights programming and coordination in South Sudan. The role includes training and supervising junior staff and supporting administrative functions within the Investigations Support Section.
Responsibilities
- Review, monitor and evaluate activities relating to the implementation of international human rights instruments, including recommendations of treaty bodies and mechanisms of the Human Rights Council.
- Prepare relevant human rights parts of reports for the General Assembly, Human Rights Council, and notes on the status of ratification of human rights instruments.
- Conduct investigations of complex illicit financial flows leading to human rights violations and abuses using various tools and methodologies.
- Liaise with international and regional financial institutions to collect relevant information to assist accountability and transitional justice processes.
- Provide expert analysis on the interrelated nature of financial, economic and socio-cultural aspects and impacts of economic crimes on South Sudan's economy and service capacity.
- Prepare analytical briefs following fact-finding missions.
- Work with UN and non-governmental programmes to integrate business and human rights, including gender dimensions, into their programs.
- Design and implement human rights programs and evaluations.
- Ensure up-to-date information on substantive human rights matters and make recommendations on actions.
- Coordinate and liaise with other UN sectors, international organizations and governments on policy matters.
- Support Investigations team leader with coordination and administrative functions relating to staff, planning and budget.
- Train and supervise new and junior staff.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, criminal investigation, law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic crime investigations, human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required.
- Experience in investigation on illicit financial flows is desirable.
- Experience in forensic accounting and or economic analysis is desirable.
- English language proficiency at UN Level III in reading, writing, listening and speaking is required.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
