The Political Affairs Officer will work within the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in the Department of Peace Operations, based in New York. The role involves gathering and analyzing political information related to mine action, providing advice and technical support, coordinating with UN and other international entities, and supporting policy and advocacy efforts.
Responsibilities
- Gather, select and analyse information from various sources including the press.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of political events affecting mine action.
- Provide inputs on mine action issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
- Monitor national and regional developments and advise field missions/UN agencies on mine action.
- Provide technical and substantive support in implementing mine action mandates.
- Maintain contacts with UN sectors, international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
- Monitor actions by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, governments and NGOs in mine action.
- Select, classify and store mine action information in computerized databases.
- Participate in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area.
- Provide secretariat services to the Inter-Agency Coordination Group for Mine Action and other meetings or missions.
- Prepare meetings of the USG and Director Mine Action with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
- Collect and analyze data to identify trends and provide insights using data visualization methods.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
- Two years or more of experience in mine action is desirable.
- Experience coordinating inter-agency and inter-governmental processes is desirable.
- English language proficiency at UN Level III in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
