The internship provides exposure to the work of the United Nations in human rights, supporting the OHCHR East Africa Multi-Country Office in Nairobi. The intern will assist in monitoring human rights developments, research, reporting, stakeholder engagement, and event organization.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze human rights developments and trends in countries covered by the MCO.
  • Research and draft internal and external notes and reports within the assigned area.
  • Prepare daily news updates on the human rights situation in those countries.
  • Support dissemination of international standards and relevant OHCHR activities on social media platforms.
  • Support engagement of stakeholders with UN human rights mechanisms including Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies.
  • Assist efforts to integrate human rights perspectives in national and regional development policies, plans and strategies.
  • Assist with organization of workshops and seminars.
  • Participate and take notes in meetings and conferences as requested.
  • Support organization of meetings and events and perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) or be enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master's degree or equivalent or higher) or have completed such degree, preferably in law, human rights, international relations, public administration, political science, social sciences or related field.
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is an asset.
  • Interns must commence the internship on the date indicated on the acceptance letter.
  • Interns are not financially remunerated and must cover costs for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may require appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
