The Public Information Officer supports the expansion of multilingual communications, focusing on Hindi-speaking audiences. The role involves implementing information programs, promoting UN multilingual initiatives, producing communication products, and coordinating outreach activities to enhance visibility of Hindi-language UN content.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, promoting United Nations multilingual initiatives such as the Hindi Language Project, including drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome.
  • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, as well as trends in language accessibility and audience engagement across Hindi and multilingual platforms, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses.
  • Undertakes activities to promote media coverage of priority issues and/or major events, with outreach initiatives to enhance the visibility of Hindi-language UN content, including development of a media strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging press conferences/media coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
  • Produces or oversees production of information communications products with focus on Hindi-language content, including proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution.
  • Prepares initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books, including drafting and publishing news stories and feature articles for UN News and related Hindi-language platforms.
  • Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies, working with UN departments, language services and external partners, to support the timely delivery and dissemination of multilingual, including Hindi-language, communication products and outreach activities.
  • Acts as focal point on specific issues, such as coordination of project activities related to Hindi-language communications, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
  • Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies, ensuring consistency with UN editorial standards and language policies and alignment with programme objectives and communication priorities.
  • Provides editorial guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff, particularly technical advice and day-to-day support in the preparation of Hindi-language communication products.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.
  • Experience in audio and video production, digital media editing and publishing and social media is required.
  • Experience in coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including government counterparts, international organizations, civil society, or private sector partners, is required.
  • Experience in supervising staff, consultants, or project teams, including providing guidance, performance management and capacity-building, is required.
  • Experience in risk management, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting on project performance is desirable.
  • Experience in sustainable development, peace and security, human rights, public information, or digital transformation is desirable.
  • Experience working in the United Nations Common System or in similar large organizations is desirable.
  • English and Hindi language proficiency at UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking is required.
