The Knowledge Management Specialist coordinates knowledge management strategies within the Volunteer Advisory Services Section (VASS) of UN Volunteers. The role involves managing knowledge platforms, generating and sharing credible knowledge, and supporting advocacy and partnership development to promote volunteerism aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Responsibilities
- Lead coordination of knowledge management initiatives and advocacy including liaising with internal and external stakeholders for content to the Knowledge Portal.
- Develop a Knowledge Management (KM) Strategy and Work Plan aligned with approved priorities in collaboration with VASS units and Regional Offices.
- Engage in developing a coordinated approach to identify, capture and promote key evidence to support advocacy efforts and initiatives.
- Review and recommend improvements to current knowledge management systems, tools and approaches internally and with external partners.
- Review systems to measure uptake and effectiveness of UNV’s knowledge work and optimize utilization.
- Contribute to outreach and knowledge exchange through the UNV Knowledge Portal and online events, engaging external partners.
- Work with Evidence and Integration workstreams to develop innovative graphics and multi-media products for the SWVR report.
- Provide summaries of relevant research and policy findings for publishing on the UNV Knowledge Portal.
- Develop and write key analytical materials including strategic notes, think pieces, and blogs.
- Identify opportunities for policy-oriented launch of the SWVR including key research forums and conferences.
- Contribute to UNV technical missions, conferences, task forces, and knowledge events to communicate research findings and expand partnerships.
- Engage in online discussions and provide inputs to communities of practice and develop policy dialogue plans for SWVR dissemination.
- Prepare speeches, presentations, background papers, documentation, and reports on SWVR as requested.
- Plan and implement external knowledge brokering and outreach events to promote SWVR and Global Volunteer Index.
- Propose marketing and publicity strategies to position the Knowledge Portal within development, policy, and volunteering communities.
- Lead documentation and dissemination of key information on SWVR and Volunteer Index development.
- Support research functions including data collection, analysis and presentations covering quantitative and qualitative aspects.
- Provide helpdesk support to UNV regional offices and field units to optimize use of knowledge tools and processes.
- Provide comments and quality control to knowledge products and guidance on types of knowledge products suited for each audience.
- Develop a system to track referencing and citation such as Mendeley, Overton and others.
- Perform other duties within functional profile as necessary for efficient functioning of the Office and Organization.
Requirements
- Advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Information Science, Knowledge Management, research and/or communications are required.
- A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the areas mentioned above in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A research degree (masters or bachelors) is an advantage.
- Minimum of 5 years (with master’s degree) or 7 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant work experience in research and knowledge management, including demonstrated experience in applying research methodologies is required.
- Research and knowledge management, including demonstrated experience in applying research methodologies.
- Experience in development programming on SDGs preferably in a national setting is desired.
- Experience publishing analytical and research papers, think pieces, and blogs is desired.
- Knowledge of and experience in volunteerism with its diverse manifestations, preferably in a development setting is desired.
- Experience in the UN system or other international organizations is desired.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Working knowledge of another official UN language, preferably French, Arabic and/or Russian, is a strong asset.
