This internship offers a six-month opportunity to support innovation projects, research, briefings, digital tools, events, and coordination within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs. The role involves in-person work at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with flexible arrangements possible.

Responsibilities

  • Support innovation project activities including brainstorming, project planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Conduct background research on innovation, conflict analysis, peacemaking and peacebuilding.
  • Assist with briefing notes, presentations and talking points.
  • Support social media analysis, digital dialogues, digital transformation and introductory generative-AI related work in line with UN policies on responsible use.
  • Attend meetings, summarize discussions, and support logistics and partner coordination.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.
  • A field of study closely related to the type of internship applied for is required.
  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.
  • Applicants should have a strong interest in digital dialogues, generative AI, digital transformation and social media analysis as tools for advancing peace and security efforts.
  • Applicants should be eager to explore how innovation can support conflict prevention, peacemaking, and peacebuilding using emerging technologies.
  • Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Applicants should be able to demonstrate initiative, reasoning and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of basic automation, including the use of Python and version control platforms such as GitHub, to support data analysis and innovation workflows is desirable.
  • Preferred internship arrangement is full-time, in-person engagement for six months, but part-time or hybrid arrangements may be considered depending on team needs and candidate availability.
