As a Medical Technologist at the American Red Cross, you will perform basic and advanced donor and patient tests, interpret results to determine donor-recipient compatibility, resolve compatibility problems, and provide reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services. The role involves performing automated and manual test procedures on blood samples and managing reagent inventory and sample logistics.
Responsibilities
- Resolve compatibility problems and provide complex reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services.
- Perform automated and manual test procedures on blood samples.
- Manage receipt, coordination, shipment, and transport of patient and donor blood samples and document supply and equipment problems.
- Manage reagent inventory including ordering, receiving, inspection and preparation.
- Recognize and resolve testing irregularities and assist other Medical Technologists in problem resolution.
- Consult with staff at other medical facilities to resolve complex serologic problems and provide special units to transfusion recipients.
- Perform manufacturing duties associated with special blood products, if applicable.
Requirements
- MT(ASCP) certification required.
- Bachelor’s degree with major in biological science or chemistry.
- Minimum 3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
- MLT (ASCP) certification with 5 years of blood banking experience can be substituted.
- State license may be required where applicable.
- Good written and verbal skills to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Must be able to work on a team.
- Physical ability to stand, stretch, stoop and bend for extended periods, lift, pull, push and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers for periods of time.
- Required to wear protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, etc.
