The IPC Nurse will work closely with Ministry of Health staff to strengthen infection prevention and control (IPC) systems and practices in health facilities supported by IRC. The role involves implementing IPC measures, coaching and mentoring health workers, and supporting Ebola isolation units to ensure safe and quality care according to clinical and IPC guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care ensuring appropriate nursing care to all patients in the isolation unit.
  • Ensure clinical management and IPC procedures are applied by clinical staff according to strict protocols.
  • Deliver IPC training to health facility staff including ongoing mentorship in the field.
  • Conduct rounds in health facility departments discussing and monitoring infection control practices with staff.
  • Develop and implement IPC improvement systems in health facility departments.
  • Establish Ebola surveillance systems in inpatient services.
  • Maintain work schedules and rosters.
  • Ensure all patient consultations are documented and patient records completed.
  • Work with medical logistics and health facility management to develop a system for IPC supply request and consumption tracking.
  • Maintain open and professional relationships with team members, fostering strong team spirit and providing supervision and guidance to enable staff success.
  • Consistently monitor and proactively evaluate field team safety, promptly reporting concerns or incidents to IRC management and liaising with external parties as needed to maintain/improve safety environment.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs.

Requirements

  • Registered nurse or nurse practitioner with current registration with a recognized professional body in country of residence.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a nurse primarily in IPC implementation or isolation services and emergency settings, with demonstrated repeated experience in viral hemorrhagic fever isolation centers or, secondarily, in cholera treatment centers or field hospitals.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing IPC practices and improving systems, ideally in low-resource settings.
  • Previous experience working with IRC is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising a team for strict adherence to infection control.
  • Previous experience in training or teaching.
  • Strong leadership, management, planning, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to live and work in difficult and high-pressure environments.
  • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure in a stressful environment, showing patience, compassion and diplomacy.
  • Fluency in French and working knowledge of English is an asset.
