The Website Officer is responsible for developing and maintaining UNEP's web platforms and Knowledge Repository, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and brand identity. The role involves web strategy, content management, business analysis, quality assurance, performance monitoring, and digital marketing to enhance user engagement and support UNEP's environmental mission.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of a cutting-edge web communication strategy for the corporate website(s), child/affiliated sites and pages and the Knowledge Repository to ensure alignment with UNEP's mandate, objectives and brand identity.
  • Manage the development, maintenance and enhancement of UNEP's web platforms in Drupal and DSpace, ensuring functionality, user-friendliness, technical efficiency, interoperability and seamless integration.
  • Set compatibility and technical standards to ensure site accessibility for all users, including in languages, for UNEP web platforms.
  • Guide web developers, designers and service providers in implementing technical solutions and improvements to web platforms and Knowledge Repository.
  • Provide technical support to internal stakeholders and end-users regarding website and Knowledge Repository functionality, navigation and content management system usage.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues, bugs and errors to ensure smooth operation of the web platforms and Knowledge Repository.
  • Collaborate with IT support teams or external vendors to address complex technical challenges and facilitate deployment of new applications.
  • Conduct business analysis, process mapping and requirements elicitation to identify needs and priorities of internal stakeholders and define business requirements for websites, campaign sites and the Knowledge Repository.
  • Validate and translate business requirements into application functionality, specifications, project documentation and workplans.
  • Engage in conceptualization of new products and solutions using innovation, design thinking and prototyping.
  • Serve as focal point for internal stakeholders to ensure web platform and Knowledge Repository content and functionality meet business objectives and are regularly updated in languages.
  • Work closely with graphic designers, UX/UI specialists, and content creators to maintain visual consistency, usability and branding across the website.
  • Provide specialized training to team members, content providers and website users on content management best practices, CMS usage, website protocols and templates.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive web content strategy aligned with organizational objectives and target audience.
  • Institute effective workflow processes and content management systems coordinating page/feature development, editing and translation.
  • Source high-quality, accurate, engaging, SEO optimized content adhering to brand guidelines.
  • Conduct regular quality control to ensure conformity with branding, theming and templates and consistent presentation across web pages.
  • Monitor feedback and respond by enhancing existing and developing new specialized sections and webpages.
  • Develop organic and paid digital marketing strategies to drive messaging and engagement around the triple planetary crisis and related campaigns.
  • Guide creation and oversee campaigns across digital channels including search engines, Google/Bing paid search and YouTube.
  • Create a measurement framework to track performance of web platforms, Knowledge Repository, web pages and campaigns and oversee monitoring and reporting.
  • Monitor web platform performance metrics such as traffic, engagement and conversion rates using analytics tools.
  • Analyze data to identify trends, areas for improvement, opportunities to enhance user experience, increase traffic and drive business outcomes.
  • Oversee reporting process providing performance insights on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis and on specific campaigns.
  • Implement optimization strategies based on insights such as A/B testing, SEO improvements and usability enhancements.
  • Conduct market research and analyze trends to identify new opportunities to improve web and campaign performance.
  • Stay up to date with emerging digital marketing trends and technologies.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

Requirements

  • Advanced University Degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Software Engineering, Computer Science or Information Systems, Communication, Public Information, or other related fields is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with the two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the development and management of web and knowledge platforms for a large science-based organization or related organization is required.
  • Experience in managing medium to large-scale technical projects in a multistakeholder environment is required.
  • Experience in managing websites content management systems such as Drupal and web content coordination is required.
  • Experience in managing library or knowledge platforms, including the technical management of repository software such as DSpace is required.
  • A minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in managing a diverse team, including responsibility for planning, performance management and delivery of outputs is required.
  • Experience in digital media strategy, transformation and campaigns and other avenues of public information is required.
  • Experience in coordinating change management initiatives within the United Nations system or similar international organization is desirable.
  • Experience with at least one project management tool (e.g. MS project) is desirable.
  • A minimum of two years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
  • English is required at UN Level II for reading, writing, listening and speaking.
