The consultant will provide dedicated programmatic support to the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) under UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). The role involves supporting notification, response, and mitigation components of MARS, maintaining trackers and templates, and ensuring timely communication with stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Draft rapid notification alerts for the oil and gas, coal and waste sectors
- Draft persistent notification reports for the oil and gas, coal and waste sectors
- Manage internal tracking systems for data collection, analysis and reporting, ensuring accuracy and consistency in project documentation
- Maintain the MARS contact trackers (government Focal Points and UNEP Permanent Representatives) and the tracker for user access to Eye on Methane INSIGHTS
- Keep MARS external communication templates up to date, including the notification and response templates
- Identify needs for the development of new features on the Plume Viewer's notification and response pages
- Track progress across the notification, feedback and mitigation components, and identify and monitor key milestones internally
- Draft MARS-related sections in IMEO’s reporting to donors
- Proactively identify and address implementation challenges through effective coordination with internal and external stakeholders
- Develop engaging and informative content for stakeholder communications, reports and presentations, aligned with project objectives and target audiences
- Track responses received from governments and operators
- Keep response trackers up to date and derive statistics (including response rates) and lessons learned from the responses received
- Prepare the graphs for the monthly snapshot on response rates and mitigation publications
- Track newly mitigated and potentially mitigated sources
- Draft mitigation factsheets for publication as sources are confirmed to have been mitigated
- Review 12 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for methane-related commitments
- Draft two Country Briefs per month
- Update the events page with information on new events attended by the MARS and Government Relations teams
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or Equivalent in environmental management, studies or policy, sustainability, climate policy, environmental archaeology or related fields with minimum of 2 years work experience, or Master Degree or Equivalent with at least one year of academic, internship, or other work experience related to methane emissions is desirable
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely
- Previous experience at UNEP’s IMEO or familiarity with methane emissions data, satellite-based emissions monitoring
