The Unit Head leads a team of physicists and support staff in nuclear data activities, develops international guidelines, assists Member States to enhance the peaceful use of technology in fission and fusion energy technologies and non-energy applications, develops and implements new programmes on training, and provides technical assistance at the request of Member States. The role includes programme development, scientific leadership, and project management to promote high-quality nuclear databases worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage the staff and activities of the Nuclear Data Development Unit, providing authoritative leadership and technical input to reports and databases prepared by staff.
- Support the Section Head in planning and monitoring of the programme and budget.
- Plan, develop and implement the Agency's programme in the development of appropriate nuclear databases for a wide range of applications and research.
- Identify the critical needs for improved numerical nuclear physics data in nuclear technology applications.
- Promote, coordinate and evaluate complex Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) and conduct related complex studies.
- Lead the International Nuclear Data Evaluation Network (INDEN) through collaboration of Member States on the evaluation of nuclear reaction data libraries.
- Develop international recommendations on the development and derivation of nuclear databases with a view to addressing the specific needs of Member States, planning and leading complex Technical Meetings.
- Work closely with appropriate technical departments within the IAEA, institutions in Member States and other relevant international organizations to ensure the effective implementation of fission, fusion and other nuclear data.
- Plan, organize and conduct training for complex technical topics.
- Provide authoritative guidance and technical input to the preparation of reports by staff.
Requirements
- Advanced university degree (Master's Degree) in Nuclear Physics or other related field is required; PhD is an asset.
- Minimum of ten years of experience in a relevant field, with at least three years at the international level.
- Proven experience in nuclear reaction and/or nuclear structure related data activities.
- Experience working in a national/international nuclear physics organization or institute is an asset.
- Staff management experience, particularly with respect to the development of technically based databases and scientific software.
- Excellent oral and written command of English is required.
- Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
