The Workplace and Accessibility Assistant provides support to a staff member with visual disability ensuring equal access and leveraging technology to enhance accessibility of the environment and information. The role includes facilitating access to information systems, converting materials into accessible formats, providing real-time verbal descriptions during meetings, mobility support, and administrative assistance within the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate access to information systems and IT platforms not compatible with assistive technologies.
  • Convert visual and non-accessible materials (presentations, charts, diagrams, images) into accessible formats.
  • Provide real-time verbal description of visual content during meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Support preparation and delivery of presentations, including slide navigation and sequencing.
  • Assist with structured note-taking and summarizing key discussion points.
  • Facilitate early access to agendas, documents, and meeting materials.
  • Provide escort and mobility support within the workplace and in unfamiliar environments, including assistance in accessing office facilities such as the cafeteria, prayer rooms, meeting rooms, and other work-related spaces.
  • Assist with mobility and orientation during domestic and international travel using sighted guide techniques.
  • Support organization of workshops, meetings, and events, including accessibility briefings for venues.
  • Conduct desk research and compile materials for reports, briefings, and meetings.
  • Proofread and format documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, and accessibility standards.
  • Support scheduling, calendar management, and travel arrangements.
  • Maintain files, databases, and information systems.
  • Provide administrative and office support related to the implementation of the work programme and associated activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Training or certification in support to people with visual disabilities and/or assistive technology is desirable.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in workplace assistance, accessibility support, administrative support, or a related field in a professional environment is required.
  • Experience in using Office 365 solution is desirable.
  • Experience in providing support to a person with a visual disability in a professional environment is desirable.
  • Experience in drafting and proofreading documentation in English is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required.
