The Medical Officer provides expert healthcare management and occupational safety and health services to UN Secretariat entities and New York based agencies. The role includes clinical duties, occupational health responsibilities, medico-administrative tasks, and collaboration with various UN entities on health policies and insurance management.
Responsibilities
- Undertakes day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies.
- Undertake day-to-day occupational health duties: pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, prepare UN staff for travelling providing immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, travel kits, etc.
- Provides health education and health promotion programs.
- Participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
- Undertakes and supervises medical evacuations, follow up and reporting.
- Liaises with UN Medical Units in duty stations and host-nation medical facilities.
- Follows the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations/repatriations.
- Participates in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises preparedness plans for the duty station/mission.
- Deputizes for a Medical Officer during his/her absence.
- Processes sick leave, child benefits liaising with HR business partners from different UN entities (UNDP, UNICEF, UN Secretariat).
- Collaborates to establish policies and procedures with various UN entities and departments.
- Participates as Focal Point for Health and Life Insurance section (HLIS) reviewing high-cost claims (clinically and financially), policy coverage and contracts renewal for the UN secretariat.
- Liaises with HLIS for the UN secretariat, UNICEF and UNDP to harmonize management of benefits.
- Liaises with Anthem, Aetna and CIGNA medical board to review, evaluate and counsel on cases in relation to policies and procedures.
- Participates as a member of the Health and Life Insurance Committee on behalf of DHMOSH.
- Produces data analysis for Medevac, Sick leave, Child Benefits activity.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
- A first-level university degree that qualifies for registration as a licensed medical practitioner (MD, MBBS, MBChB or equivalent) and current unrestricted registration with the medical licensing authority of one of the Members States of the United Nations is required.
- Postgraduate qualification in a medical specialty is desirable.
- Unrestricted registration with the medical licensing authority of one of the Members States of the United Nations is required.
- Postgraduate qualification in a medical specialty is desirable.
- Formal certification in CPR in either BCLS, PHTLS, ETB, ACLS, ATLS or equivalent emergency medical certification is desirable.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine is required.
- Experience with electronic medical record systems is required.
- Experience with managing health insurance claims is required.
