The Protection Associate monitors protection standards and operational procedures in protection delivery in line with international standards. The role supports programme staff and coordinates effective protection responses to populations of concern, ensuring their involvement in decisions affecting them and liaising with authorities and partners on protection policy.

Responsibilities

  • Stay abreast of political, social, economic and cultural developments that impact the protection environment
  • Consistently apply International and National Law and applicable UN/UNHCR and IASC policy, standards and codes of conduct
  • Assist in providing comments on existing and draft legislation related to populations of concern
  • Provide advice on protection issues to populations of concern; liaise with competent authorities to ensure issuance of personal and other relevant documentation
  • Assist in conducting eligibility and status determination for populations of concern
  • Contribute to measures to identify, prevent and reduce statelessness
  • Contribute to a country-level child protection plan as part of the protection strategy
  • Contribute to a country-level education plan as part of the protection strategy
  • Monitor Standard Operating Procedures for all protection/solutions activities
  • Manage individual protection cases including GBV and child protection; monitor and intervene in cases of refoulement, expulsion and other protection incidents
  • Assist in identifying durable solutions for populations of concern through voluntary repatriation, local integration and resettlement
  • Contribute to design, implementation and evaluation of protection related AGD based programming with partners
  • Facilitate effective information management through provision of disaggregated data on populations of concern and their problems
  • Participate in initiatives to capacitate authorities, institutions and NGOs to strengthen national protection legislation and procedures
  • Assist supervisor in prioritizing populations of concern for interview, counselling and propose protection support for individual cases
  • Assist supervisor with enforcing compliance of local implementing partners with global protection policies and standards of professional integrity
  • Submit individual payments request for populations of concern for approval
  • Support identification and management of risks and seek opportunities impacting objectives in area of responsibility
  • Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

  • For G6 - 3 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher
  • Certificates and/or Licenses: International Law, Political Science or other related field
  • Knowledge of English and/or UN working language of the duty station if not English
  • Ability to establish wide-ranging contacts with government counterparts, partners and partner agencies
  • Experience in protection work including refugee protection principles and frameworks
  • IT-Computer Literacy
  • Knowledge of protection-related guidelines, standards and indicators
  • Knowledge of refugee protection principles and framework
