The consultancy supports research activities in Sudan including finalizing midline design, training fieldwork team, quality assurance of data, causal and thematic analysis, drafting reports and dissemination. The role involves conducting interviews, desk research, training enumerators, monitoring data collection, analysis, report drafting, and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct up to 10 key informant interviews at the programme level to complement the description of the intervention.
  • Conduct desk research about maternal health, care practices and gender norms in the region for the background chapter of the report.
  • Develop the final study design, research protocol, instrument, and amendment of the ethical clearance including addressing Board requests.
  • Prepare and facilitate QUIP enumerators training in close collaboration with the national partner, including an in-country mission of approximately 7 working days.
  • Monitor data collection operation and transcription process, ensuring transcript quality in collaboration with local data collection firm.
  • Elaborate analytical strategy and codebook for thematic analysis, clean QuIP data set, conduct coding and analysis through Causal Maps and MAXQDA of 112 transcripts.
  • Draft the report including all chapters and revisions following internal review.
  • Prepare for and present preliminary findings at an online validation workshop to key stakeholders to collect feedback.
  • Draft final version of all chapters based on feedback from validation workshop and two external reviewers.
  • Draft report brief, slide-deck, and deliver presentations as required for dissemination activities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Sociology, anthropology, public/social policy, public health, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in qualitative research and evaluation, in low- and middle income contexts, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Strong experience with Qualitative Impact Protocol (QUIP) data collection, including in QuIP training for data collection.
  • Strong experience in applying the Qualitative Impact Protocol (QUIP) for the analysis using CausalMap.
  • Excellent qualitative analytical skills and writing skills.
  • Expertise in social protection.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Proficient in Arabic (desirable).
  • Research experience in Sudan and/or in humanitarian contexts (desirable).
  • A PhD in Sociology, anthropology, public/social policy, public health, education, or related field (desirable).
  • Knowledge of maternal health and nutrition, and their linkages to social protection (desirable).
  • Experience with mixed-method impact evaluation (desirable).
