The Protection Assistant - Community Based supports strengthening protection outcomes by catalyzing community actions around Persons with Specific Needs (PSNs) and promoting community-based protection of Forcibly Displaced and Stateless Persons (FDSPs). The role involves working with community structures, providing direct support to PSNs, and coordinating with community protection components.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate operation of protection help desks registering complaints and providing timely and appropriate responses to persons of concern.
  • Strengthen linkages between community members, partners and service providers to break barriers to access for persons of concern.
  • Mobilize and create protection information in the community to inform persons of concern and enable precautionary actions against protection risks.
  • Identify gaps in protection and community services and generate ideas to address them.
  • Strengthen capacities of community-based structures through trainings, mentorship and reflective sessions.
  • Participate in PSN profiling and ongoing risk assessment and analysis to design adequate responses.
  • Ensure quality data collection, analysis and storage in line with Protection Information Management principles.
  • Implement community-based sub-sector activities as planned and monitor protection trends daily.
  • Ensure adherence to standards and principles of thematic areas and IRC accountability standards.
  • Conduct regular community consultations and protection monitoring, drafting flash reports on major protection incidents and risks.
  • Identify beneficiaries needing further support and ensure timely referral and follow-up.
  • Contribute to drafting weekly and monthly reports.
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders and represent IRC in local community-based working groups and meetings.
  • Coordinate project implementation with partners including referrals, gap analysis and advocacy.
  • Provide technical and programmatic leadership for community-based structures and conduct daily field visits for mentoring and training.
  • Contribute to monitoring and evaluation of projects and interventions, documenting successes and challenges.
  • Assist in participatory needs/vulnerability and capacity assessments of affected communities.
  • Implement MEAL tools including pre- and post-tests and produce activity reports as required.

Requirements

  • Relevant university degree (e.g. psychology, social work, pedagogy or education, international development) or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience in protection in humanitarian setting.
  • Experience in the delivery of community programs to vulnerable groups.
  • Understanding of protection principles, protection minimum standards and basic psychosocial support concepts.
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and prioritize the safety and dignity of beneficiaries at all times.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to communicate and write in English.
