The Coordinator will support the eradication of polio from Afghanistan through high routine immunization coverage, supplementary immunization activities, and surveillance systems. The role involves liaising with partners, providing technical support, guiding immunization activities, and contributing to surveillance and reporting efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Liaise with different Polio eradication and VPD partners and enlist continued commitment of national/local authorities to stated goals.
  • Provide technical support to National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) for implementation of National Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication (NEAP).
  • Strengthen the engagement of religious leaders, community elders, and key influencers in polio eradication activities.
  • Provide guidance to the supplementary immunization activities for VPDs.
  • Collaborate with the preparation, implementation and monitoring of supplementary immunization activities for VPDs including microplanning, training and monitoring.
  • Timely analysis of data and its use for corrective action.
  • Provide technical support to the surveillance activities (for AFP and VPD) to ensure achievement/maintenance of certification standards through participation in the planning and implementation of active surveillance and routine reporting.
  • Reinforce the training activities and supervision of surveillance/support staff.
  • Participate in the organization of advocacy/orientation meetings for health care providers.
  • Ensure proper case investigations, follow-up and classification.
  • Regular analysis of surveillance data and monitoring indicators.
  • Contribute to the development of transition and legacy plan for use of PEI resources contributing to VPD strengthening.
  • Oversee activities of national support staff recruited by WHO working in the polio eradication activities.
  • Submit monthly reports to reflect progress achieved constraints and proposed actions.

Requirements

  • University Degree in Medicine.
  • Postgraduate degree or training in Public Health/Epidemiology/Public Health Administration/Organization of health services or control of Communicable Diseases is desirable.
  • At least 5 years relevant experience in the development and implementation of immunization programmes at the national/sub-national level.
  • Experience of work in UN and/or other international organizations is desirable.
  • Sound technical knowledge on epidemiology and surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases; prevention and control measures; preparedness and response.
  • Ability to establish harmonious working relations with national counterparts and international colleagues.
  • Expert knowledge of English.
  • Expert knowledge of Local Language.
