The Translator (English) will work within the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor, responsible for translating and self-revising documents from French and other situation-related languages into English. The role includes proofreading, contributing to terminology databases, and other language-related tasks to support the Office's mandate.

Responsibilities

  • Translate and self-revise documents from French and from one or more of the Court’s situation-related languages into English covering a wide range of topics including legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters.
  • Proofread and cross-read the work of other translators.
  • Contribute to terminology and reference databases.
  • Perform other tasks as required such as transcribing audio/video material and IT related tasks.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law or any other related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years (7 years with a first-level university degree) of work experience in translation, interpretation or linguistics, preferably in an international organisation, is required.
  • Some specialisation in topics dealt with by the Court, e.g. legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent eye for detail, accuracy, style and usage.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant computer software, specifically CAT (such as memoQ) & MT tools, office suites, and electronic document management systems.
  • Proven ability and flexibility in working to deadlines effectively under pressure with evolving tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team.
  • Ability to keep strict standards of confidentiality.
  • Openness to skills development.
  • Mother-tongue proficiency in English and a high-level of proficiency in French is required.
  • Candidates must also demonstrate a high level of proficiency in at least one of the Court’s situation-related languages including Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Rohingya, Cebuano, Tagalog, Burmese, Dari, Pashto and Swahili.
