Graphic Illustrator

The Graphic Illustrator will work with the project team to develop creative concepts and visual themes and design graphic illustrations that enrich training materials, messages, and advisories for dissemination and better comprehension of end users. The role involves producing original artworks and illustrations using professional design software, supporting the development of training manuals and compendiums related to disaster risk reduction and anticipatory action in Timor-Leste.

Responsibilities

• Analyze text and translate related concepts into illustrations using colours, graphics and effects to better visualize concepts
• Combine hand-drawn and painted artworks with computer and digital techniques for production development
• Perform two rounds of corrections following OCC/PWS and divisional quality checks, with additional rounds if corrections are overlooked
• Deliver files in high- and low-resolution formats for print and web dissemination, including complete design packages (source files)
• Support the consultant and project teams on the development and finalization of disaster risk reduction and anticipatory action training manual with relevant graphic illustrations
• Support the consultant and project team on the development and finalization of compendium of technologies on disaster risk reduction and anticipatory action with relevant graphic illustrations
• Maintain liaison with OCC to ensure compliance with FAO standards, aligned messaging, and appropriate review and clearance processes
• Ensure all communication materials follow FAO clearance processes and comply with FAO standards including strategic framework, social media policy, branding guidelines, terminology, and logo policy

Requirements

• University degree in fine arts, graphic design or related field or relevant technical training/qualification
• Two years of experience in fine arts, graphic design or related field
• Working knowledge of English and Tetun, both written and spoken
• Strong ability to transform technical content and key messages into clear, engaging and user-friendly visual products for diverse audiences, including rural communities
• Good skills in developing illustrations, infographics, icons, posters, training visuals, social media graphics and other communication materials for both print and digital use
• Ability to design visual materials that are culturally appropriate, gender-sensitive and suitable for the Timor-Leste context
• Good understanding of layout, typography, colour, composition, visual hierarchy and branding principles
• Ability to produce high-quality design outputs in formats suitable for printing, online publication, presentations and social media dissemination
• Ability to work collaboratively with technical teams, communications staff and government counterparts to develop creative concepts and refine designs based on feedback
• Ability to manage multiple design assignments and deliver quality outputs within agreed timelines
• Familiarity with agriculture, climate change, disaster risk reduction, anticipatory action, early warning systems or community awareness materials would be an advantage
• Good computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office applications and graphic design software
