The role involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to support the energy transition through robust investment decisions.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to investment decisions that support the energy transition by assessing the technical, economic and financial viability of energy projects and programmes, including energy efficiency, electricity and heat networks, renewable energy and related transition investments.
- Help evaluate the wider value and impact of projects, looking at their strategic fit, commercial viability, affordability, environmental and social sustainability, and alignment with EU and EIB energy and climate objectives.
- Analyse energy markets and key risks, including demand trends, pricing and tariff structures, regulatory frameworks and support schemes, and translate your findings into clear conclusions on project viability and expected impact.
- Work closely with lending teams and multidisciplinary project teams throughout the project cycle — from early screening and structuring to appraisal, monitoring and completion — helping identify sound and impactful investment opportunities.
- Assess project risks and financing considerations, including financial model outputs, sensitivity and scenario analyses, market conditions, regulatory risks and risk allocation for projects that the EIB may finance.
- Turn complex analysis into clear advice for decision-makers by contributing to concise appraisal, monitoring and completion reports, as well as technical and economic opinions at relevant approval stages.
- Follow projects through implementation and evaluation, contributing to project monitoring, final assessments, lessons learnt and improvements for future operations and sector approaches.
- Support external analytical work and Technical Assistance, helping define consultants’ assignments and reviewing the quality, relevance and usefulness of their outputs.
- Contribute to strategic sector thinking by supporting papers on energy markets, regulation, policy developments, methodology and EIB sector strategies.
- Represent and support the EIB in selected external engagements, including sector events, meetings, missions and exchanges with promoters, public authorities, EU institutions and other relevant stakeholders.
- Continue developing your expertise across areas covered by the Energy and Environment Department and emerging cross-cutting energy transition themes.
Requirements
- University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) preferably in relevant discipline, e.g in Economics, Finance, Business or other relevant studies for energy sector projects.

- Knowledge of energy markets and policies, including EU energy and climate policy frameworks, regulatory arrangements and support mechanisms relevant to networks, renewables, energy efficiency or related energy transition investments.
- Ability to contribute to financial and economic analysis, including review of financial models, sensitivity and scenario analyses, assessment of market conditions and risk allocation.
- Affinity for quantitative analysis and evidence-based judgement, with the ability to communicate conclusions clearly in reports and discussions.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and engage constructively with internal and external stakeholders.
