Join the Linear and Non-Linear Optics Section within CERN’s Accelerator and Beam Physics Group to develop advanced software and analysis tools for precise beam-optics measurements and corrections, contributing to the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider's operation and physics programme.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and extend the core Optics Measurement and Correction (OMC) framework and toolset used during LHC commissioning and operation.
  • Explore software solutions to improve the efficiency and capability of optics measurement and corrections in the LHC.
  • Update accelerator model creation and correction algorithms to utilise new simulation tools.
  • Explore the viability of automation for key measurement and analysis workflows, implementing solutions where possible.
  • Develop new GUIs and analysis tools to be used in the CERN Control Centre during optics commissioning.
  • Participate in, and contribute to the analysis of, optics measurements in the CERN accelerators.

Requirements

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, excluding Pakistani, Lithuanian, Latvian, Cypriot and Croatian nationals due to Associate Membership Agreement ceilings.
  • By the application deadline, you have a master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience since graduation or a PhD with a maximum of 3 years of professional experience since graduation.
  • You are not eligible with only a bachelor’s degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Background in programming and software design, with experience in Python.
  • Familiarity with version control systems and collaborative workflows (Github).
  • Experience of GUI development.
  • Knowledge of particle accelerator physics and operation would be an advantage.
  • Your studies focused on Physics, Software Engineering.
  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
